International Cephalopod Awareness Day Celebration!

On October 8 it is International Cephalopod Awareness Day and in celebration of this day I'll be doing several things:

1: I'm giving away the necklace on this page. Here are the rules:
  • To enter all you have to do is leave a comment on this post saying which cephalopod is your favorite between now and 6pm (EST) on October 8. I won't consider any entries posted after that time.
  • I'll be pulling the winner out of the virtual hat at 7pm on October 8. I will announce the winner shortly after 7pm so watch this blog (if you're on twitter leaving your twitter username will make it possible for me to contact you directly as well)
  • The winner will have 3 days to claim their prize by emailing me their mailing address.
  • In the event the prize isn't claimed I'll pull a new number out of the hat.
2: Free shipping October 8 on everything in my Etsy shop featuring a cephalopod (necklaces, earrings, perma-pets, etc.) sorry that I can't offer international shipping free but it will be greatly reduced.

3: Little cephalopod surprise with every order. It's a surprise so I'm not telling you what it is.

4: Today is my one year anniversary on Etsy (yes I know my account says September 28 but I didn't actually open shop until October 1st last year) it's amazing how far I've come since then.

I will have to go with the Orthocerids, rulers of the Ordovician (well, second to trilobites :-P)

Podblack said...

The cuttlefish! Because it's a great poet as well as a great cephalopod. :)

Cuttlefish is so cute, but the giant squid... those guys I can just watch in awe 24/7. I anxiously wait for the day when we can actually find and watch these amazing creatures on a regular basis instead of only catching glimpses or finding corpses.

My fav is Teuthida(squid), these beautifue creatures make-up may dreams and nightmares. they are sleek and graceful in the ocean. they have many colors, and types of camouflage. so yeah I vote for the squid.

Does Cthulhu count? If not, the Cuttlefish. I love it, and I love how its name sounds like "Cuddle" when spoken quickly.

Being an Australian, I love the beauty of the Blue Ringed Octopus (Hapalochlaena maculosa) but don't go anywhere near it because of its poison!

I vote for the octopi who live in the aquarium tanks and figure out how to break thinks like Otto in Germany or the one in Santa Monica that flooded three offices.

I'm particularly fond of the Octopods that can manipulate a Rubik's cube. No doubt they already do better than I do.

Vampyromorphida! Coolest ever! (Or Giant Pacific octopus, or Humboldt squids, or Caribbean reef squids, or giant squids, or cuttlefish, or the little blue guys.) LOVE THEM ALL!

i'm rather fond of Nautilus pompilius, though squids are pretty awesome.

Octopus!

Someday they will be land-roving and take over the World!!!

Plus they're tricky little buggers.

I love Octopi, or Octopuses, or whatever the actual plural is. No particular kind, just octopuses in general.

My favorite is Chambered Nautilus

I'd have to go with Pfeffer's Flamboyant Cuttlefish, they are adorable, deadly, and... well, FLAMBOYANT!

Hooray for Cephalopods!

Humboldt Squid, because if you're gonna be bad ass, be a bad-ass cephalopod!

But I love ALL the cephalopods! Okay, I'm a teeny bit partial to the Vampire Squid, just because they're so incredibly bizarre. :P

Because I'm from Oregon, and just because I like them so much, I vote for the giant pacific octopus (Enteroctopus dofleini). Thanks for the chance to participate and have a bit of fun!

Making me pick just one was cruel. My favorite would have to be the blue ringed octopus, because reading about it was what got me interested in cephalopods in the first place. Failing that, the giant squid. Because I love deep sea creatures and they are just awesome.

I'm ClockworkJungle on Twitter.

Ha! I want to know if Cthulhu counts too. I guess probably not.

I really like promachoteuthis sulcus, It's a very small (25mm), very odd looking thing from the deeply deeps, around 2 km down.

Thanks for the great giveaway!

Ammonite: and they will return from extinction and reconquer the open ocean. They could get up to two meters across, and make useful index fossils. What is not to like?

Phoebe said...

I guess I love a good, old fashioned octopus. Although I do love your cuttlefish jewelry!

This great. Thanks for getting in the spirit and making this offer in celebration of cephalopods.

My vote goes to the Flamboyant Cuttlefish (Metasepia pfefferi).

Having spent twelve hours or so glued to the webcast of TePapa's unthawing-and-examination, I must admit a decided fondness for the Colossal Squid now. My mother, meanwhile, favours the nautilus. She likes the way they scooty-swim around backwards.

SilverRowan said...

I think I have to go with the blue-ring octopus. One of the most toxic animals in current existence? O_O Never mind that it looks really neat too!
From Wikipedia: "The blue-ringed octopus is the size of a golf ball, but its venom is powerful enough to kill humans. There is no blue-ringed octopus antivenin available."

After a long discussion with my girls looking at various pictures on the web, we've chosen Sepia officinalis as our favorite cephalopod. "Because they're cute!"

My dream is to have an octopus as a pet. They are so incredibly intelligent, as well as strong, sneaky and sleek. Any animal that can manipulate its entire body through an opening no smaller than its beak is a winner in my book!

cephalopods are so amazing it's very hard to choose one favorite! i would probably have to go with the Late Cretaceous Didymoceras ammonites -- they were pretty awesomely weird.
